Traditional english meal made with mince beef mash potatoes onions carrots and peas in a rich gravy
Ingredients
500g minced beef
4med carrots
2med onions
200g cheddar cheese
sunflower oil
500g potatoes
1 Tin tomatoes
gravy granules
2 cups frozen peas
2 cap fulls balsamic vinegar
Instructions
peel the potatoes then wash them, if large cut them in half.It helps them cook quicker.Peel and wash carrots,then chop into little cubes (very small).Peel,wash onions and chop into quite small bits.Get frozen peas out of freezer.
When chopping and peeling being done,get a large frying pan, gas on.Add two to 3, tablesspoons of sunflower oil to pan. Fry onions and carrots for about 15 mins until onions are soft.Do not let onions burn.Add peas from frozen, to the pan, with onions and carrots cook for 5 to 10 mins.Then add to the pan the minced beef.Mix well with all the other ingredients cook until meat is browned all over.Then add a tin of tomato.Keep the heat medium on gas all the way through cooking.Put potatoes on gas on high heat,when it comes to the boil take lid off saucepan and let potatoes boil until quite soft which will take about 15 to 20 mins.Keep checking after 15 mins.Meanwhile make up some gravy granules in a cup with boiling water,just over half a cup full.Add to the mince meat in the saucepan.Put on very low heat and stir in and add 2 cap fulls balsamic vinegar.Grate some cheddar cheese for the top of the mashed potato.Turn the mince meat mixture into an oven proof dish.Once the potatoes are cooked drain off with colander,then put potatoes back into the saucepan and the add a tablespoon of margerine or butter and half a cup full of milk to the potatoes.Mash with masher until smooth.Spoon the mash over the minced beef mixture.Cover all over leaving no gaps.Smooth over with a knife or spoon.Put cheese on top of the potato. Put into the oven (middle) at 180 c.Cook for about half an hour or until slightly brown. serve hot.
