Better Homes & Garden Recipe for homemade pie crust & apple pie
*Note, I have increased ingredients for pie crust to make it easier to roll out by having more dough than what they suggest
Recipe Source: Better Homes and Garden
Ingredients
2 3/4 cup flour (for pie crust)
1 1/2 tsp salt (for pie crust)
1 cup shortening (for pie crust)
11 Tablespoons cold water (for pie crust)
6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (2 lbs)
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
dash ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
Pie Crust:
In mixing bowl, stir together flour & salt. Cut in shortening until pieces are the size of small peas. Sprinkle 1 Tablespoon of the water over part of the mixture; gently toss with a fork. Push to the side of bowl. Repeat till all is moistened. Divide dough in half. Roll out dough to a circle about 12 inches in diameter. Fit into pie plate. For top crust, roll out remaining dough. Cut slits for escape of steam. Place desired pie filling in pie shell. Top with top crust, flute edge.
Pie filling:
Combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg. Add sugar mixture to sliced apples; toss to coat. Fill a pastry lined pie plate; dot with butter. Adjust top crust. Seal and flute edge. Brush top with milk, water, or melted butter. Sprinkle sugar on top. Cover edge of pie with foil. Bake in 375 degree oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil; bake for 20-25 min more. Cool before serving.
