I have no idea why these are called Surprise Splices! The recipe is from my Gran.
It’s quite a store-cupboard recipe, this one. Very rich, very tasty.
Recipe Source: Granny P-
Ingredients
Base:
1 packet rich tea biscuits (~ 7½ oz.)
4 oz. margarine
4 oz. soft brown sugar
3 oz. desiccated coconut
2 level tbsp. Ovaltine (malt and chocolate powdered drink)
1 egg
Topping:
2 oz. margarine
2 level tbsp. custard powder
2 tbsp. boiling water
10 oz. icing sugar
Instructions
• Crush the biscuits.
• Melt the margarine, ovaltine and sugar in a pan over a gentle heat, stirring constantly.
• Beat the egg and add to the pan – cook for 1-2 mins, still stirring.
• Add the crushed biscuit and dessicated coconut.
• Press into a medium sized flat tin and leave to cool.
• Sieve the icing sugar and custard into a large bowl and add the margarine and boiling water. Beat until fluffy.
• Spread on top of the cooled base layer.
